Face Mask applies a 2D texture to a user’s face to create face paint or makeup effects.
Add Face Mask Object
Add a Face Mask object by clicking + Add object > Face Effects > Face Mask in the Hierarchy panel.
You cannot modify the Transform of the Face Mask, but you can adjust the Face Mask position relative to the face using the Offset of the Face Mask component.
Make Your Own Face Mask Texture
Attached is a template to help you make your own Face Mask texture. It includes templates for Whole Face Mask, Eyes, Eyelashes, and Lip. Be sure to test your design on all three models to ensure it compliments a variety of skin tones.
When creating a face mask effect, make sure you read our guidelines for building inclusive effects.
In Photoshop, select the artboard you want to export and go to File > Export > Artboards to Files. Change the export settings to Artboard Content Only, check the Export Selected Artboards box, uncheck the Include Background in Export box, and then change the File Type to PNG-24. Hit Run to confirm and export.

Import Face Mask Texture
You can import the Face Mask Texture by clicking + Add Asset > Import > From Computer. You can also simply drag the texture into the Assets panel.
- Format: Effect House supports .png and .jpg files
- Resolution limit: 1024 x 1024 pixels
- Single file size: Less than 1 MB
- Total effect package: Less than 5 MB
Configure Face Mask Component
Change Face Mask Type
Face Region: This property will designate where the mesh will appear on the face: Whole (Default), Eyes, Eyelashes, and Lips.
Texture: Click Face Mask Texture to choose a texture from the Assets picker.
Be careful of the size of the image you imported for Face Mask. If you change the Face Region type to Eyes, Lips, or Eyelashes, make sure the size of your image is aligned with the template we provided above.
Opacity Enable: Check this property to customize the Opacity Texture and Color of the mesh. This is checked by default.
- Opacity Texture: This property allows the user to apply an alpha mask texture to the mask. Click this property to choose a texture from the Assets picker.
- Color: Use this property to determine the color that will blend with the texture.
- Opacity: This slider will set the transparency of the texture.
- Default: 0.5
- Range: 0-1, 0 is invisible.
Blend Mode: This property determines the blend mode. Choose from the different modes from the dropdown menu to determine different calculations used to blend color and texture.
- Soft Light
- Color Burn
- Color Dodge
- Linear Dodge
Adjust the Face Mask’s Texture Position
Offset: Adjust the mesh position.
- Default: 1
- Range: 0-2 (left to right)
- Default: 1
- Range: 0-2 (top to bottom)
Select the Face to Apply Face Mask to
Which Face: Select which face Face Mask should be applied to. You can select more than one face.
- Default: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4
- 0 – 4
- Face 0 represents the first face to appear in the scene; Face 4 represents the fifth face to appear in the scene.
Test Skin Tones in the Preview Panel
Testing Face Mask on different skin tones is recommended to ensure the effect is inclusive. You can find different media demos from the drop-down list in the Preview panel.
Use Multiple Face Masks
You can apply face masks to multiple people’s faces.
Use Which Face to designate which face a Face Mask applies to. You can apply different face mask textures to different people’s faces.
If you’re using multiple Face Masks on one person’s face, the face masks will show up by following the image’s render order.

When Face Mask is on top of Face Mask(1), Face Mask will show in front of Face Mask(1) on the person’s face.
Projects created before Effect House v1.5.1 will not be able to use the Which Face property. Users will need to add a new Face Mask component to use this function.
